The land-based security aspect of the Olympic and Paralympic Games

The French Armed Forces are providing sizeable and deterrent support to the security arrangements put in place on the French territory for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Their main mission is to guarantee an effective response at all times to a militarised terrorist threat. As part of the current Operation Sentinelle, which has been extended to meet the specific needs of the Olympic Games, the armed forces are providing their expertise in support of the domestic security forces.

At the end of June 2024, the 27th Mountain Infantry Brigade will take command of the major part of the land-based security for the 2024 Olympic Games in the Ile-de-France, Marseilles and Nice regions. For this mission, it will be reinforced by external units, forming a joint brigade with multiple and complementary skills.

In the Paris region, the command will be divided into four major action zones. Each zone will be under the command of a tactical headquarters and will be criss-crossed by multiple dynamic patrols, creating a combat tool that is both deterring, reactive and mobile, in close cooperation with the domestic security forces. The dynamic patrols will cover the whole of the Paris Region, all the key points of the 2024 Olympic Games and all the key events.

In order to provide security for the sporting events, the Paris Defence Zone, with the support of a very large number of French Army and joint services personnel, will put in place a flexible and adaptable system, as close as possible to a complex urban environment. Its effectiveness is based on regular consultations between the armed forces and the Ministry of the Interior and Overseas territories enabling the needs to be anticipated and the resources to be optimised.

The troops deployed at the various Olympic venues will be commanded at operational level by the general officer of the defence and security zone, the Military Governor of Paris. Sentinelle-Olympic and Paralympic Games is designed to prevent and deter the terrorist threat, as well as to support the domestic security forces in certain specialised areas. It is based on the tried and tested reactivity logics put in place since 2015 as part of Operation Sentinelle.

The soldiers will be deployed several weeks ahead of the Olympic Games in order to anticipate the security mission and to familiarise themselves with the patrol areas. The mission itself will begin with the opening of the Olympic Village. The armed forces will also be responsible for providing full security for the port of Ivry Charenton where the boats will be stored and prepared in the run-up before the opening ceremony.

The support of military personnel involved in securing the Olympic and Paralympic Games 2024 has been anticipated. In Paris, the Reuilly camp has been designed to enable a force of several thousand men to be stationed as close as possible to the deployment sites within the city of Paris by offering greater mobility.
