Military dog-handling teams will help securing the Olympic Games

As part of the security arrangements for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, military dog-handling teams are contributing in the same way as other army specialities to supporting the domestic security forces throughout France.

A dog-handling team is made up of a man and his dog, forming an essential and inseparable pair. The combination of the handler's analytical skills and the dog's enhanced abilities are complementary and offer great versatility. There are two types of dogs in the French armed forces: dogs trained to detect explosives and dogs capable of intervening and neutralising a human threat. Dogs are considered as soldiers, and thus receive specific training every day.

The dogs' olfactory capabilities considerably increase the chances of detecting explosives, enabling EOD teams to deal with the threat. During the Olympic and Paralympic Games, explosives detection teams will be deployed throughout the country. They undergo several months' rigorous training to operate on the national territory. The men and dogs are used to operating as part of support missions for the domestic security forces. This cooperation has already been tried and tested at major events such as 2016 EURO and the 2023Rugby World Cup. Intervention teams enhance the capabilities of SENTINELLE units. Intervention dogs are regularly deployed as part of dynamic patrols at the festival of lights in Lyons and the Christmas market in Strasbourg. During these busy events and as part of the fight against terrorism, the dog acts as a deterrent.

The 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games represent an unprecedented deployment for military canine teams. In fact, many sites will have to be cleared before the public can be welcomed, and all within a very tight timeframe. The teams will come from professional units from the different services. The 132nd canine infantry regiment will provide most of the manpower. In addition, some forty foreign military dog-handling teams will be reinforcing the security arrangements.
