The preparation for the future of defence systems involves imagining possible futures, anticipating threats and risks, advancing technology and developing European partnerships. Its aim is to provide France with the means necessary for its defence and security policy with the desired level of autonomy and respect for its international commitments. To prepare for the future, the Armaments Procurement Agency (DGA) ensures continual access to the necessary industrial and technological base by developing strategies for research and technology, industry and cooperation. In order to do this, DGA participates in preparing threat scenarios and defence systems in close coordination with the armed forces.

Forward-looking analysis

The aim of the DefenceArmaments Procurement Agency's (DGA) planning effort is to identify threats that may be encountered in the future and identify the technologies for responding to them. Planning provides directions for defence research and is used to prepare the plan for equipping the armed forces. It identifies the technological skills necessary for building tomorrow’s military equipment. The result of these different approaches is summarised in the 30-year forecast plan (PP30).

Research and technology

The Armaments Procurement Agency (DGA) directs and conducts research to master the technology that will be necessary for building future equipment for the armed forces. The work covers the entire range of technological maturity (demonstration, technology research and basic technology) and is intended to build a European technological base for defence and security. The research and technology effort is carried out by supporting science and innovation. In addition, DGA has special relationships with civil research organisations to develop dual-use technology research.
