Héraclès

The French Navy is actively involved in the war on terrorism, specifically in the northern Indian Ocean, as part of operation Héraclès, which is the naval part of the multinational operation in Afghanistan, known as Operation Enduring Freedom. Working alongside many vessels from other coalition nations, the French vessels deployed as part of Héraclès are tasked with preventing the transit of terrorists from Afghanistan. This involves tracking shipping movements in the area as closely as possible.

France generally deploys a frigate within the context of Héraclès. An Atlantique 2 maritime patrol aircraft based in Djibouti is sometimes added to this force. In 2006, the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle was deployed as part of operation Héraclès, together with its 9 Rafale, 14 Super-Etendard, and 2 Hawkeye aircraft.

In the longer term, operation Héraclès also plays a role in stabilising the Horn of Africa. Through their presence, the multinational forces engaged have the indirect effect of protecting those living along the Gulf of Oman against acts of violence and abuse.

The French units deployed as part of operations Héraclès and Enduring Freedom under UN mandate remain under the operational control of the Admiral in charge of the maritime zone of the Indian Ocean (ALINDIEN).
