The North Atlantic Treaty signed in Washington on 4 April 1949 founded the Atlantic Alliance. The purpose of NATO is to guarantee the freedom and security of all its members by political and military means, to defend the values of democracy, human rights and the rule of law, and to contribute to peace and stability throughout the world.

The collapse of the USSR in 1991 removed its original raison d'être. However, NATO adapted to this change and remains a key pillar of the security of its members.
